Diagnostic centers/Pathological labs/Sample collection centers: An Unchecked Scenario

The evaluation of the status of healthcare sector would be incomplete without analyzing the working and status of pathological labs and sample collection center. Ample of these centers are coming into existence as the business is profoundly aggressive and cost driven.

One of the leading newspaper has now exposed certain details of these centers in NCR Delhi where number of pathological lab and sample collecting centers in NCR are Over 1000 with no trained staff, lack of quality equipment, lack of space, improper storage, improper transportation,
lack of accredition, lack of proper facilities for refrigeration, supplies and drinking water.

This scenario has inspired Delhi government to issue a public notice with reference to a health ministry notification on minimum standards for medical diagnostic labs.

The Public notice comprises of provisions:

a) To display a signage at a conspicuous place in their premises regarding the category of their pathological laboratory.


b) The reports of the Medium and Advanced categories are to be signed either by doctors having Post-Graduate qualification in Pathology/ Bio-chemistry/Microbiology/ Laboratory Medicine or by doctors having MBBS with Ph.D qualification in Pathology/ Bio-chemistry/Microbiology/ Laboratory Medicine.


c) The reports of Basic Composite laboratory, wherever the interpretation of medical report is required, the same is to be signed by a doctor having minimum MBBS Degree and the reports of which contain only numerical value/ result of the test/ technical analysis of samples, then signing of the report by MBBS doctors may not be essential.
