The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has urged all States and Union Territories to step up their awareness efforts and implement concrete measures to combat the growing public health concern of obesity. This call to action follows the Prime Minister’s recent appeal for urgent measures against obesity and a 10% reduction in oil consumption.
The matter was extensively discussed during the 47th Central Advisory Committee (CAC) meeting held in New Delhi on May 27, 2025. During the deliberations, States and UTs were strongly encouraged to scale up comprehensive strategies, including widespread public awareness campaigns, to effectively address the Prime Minister’s vision for an obesity-free and healthier nation.
A key point of discussion was the recent directive from the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) regarding the establishment of ‘sugar boards’ in schools. The FSSAI emphasized the critical need for states to actively support and implement this initiative on a large scale, recognizing its potential to significantly curb excessive sugar consumption among school-going children and promote healthier dietary habits from a young age.
The FSSAI underscored the pivotal role of states in the successful execution of these crucial public health initiatives. Discussions centered around strategies for states to enhance their food safety surveillance, actively promote the ‘Eat Right India’ movement, and encourage the availability of nutritious and safe food options across all sections of society. The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to providing all necessary technical guidance and support to states and UTs in their endeavors.
The 47th CAC meeting witnessed the participation of over 60 individuals, including Commissioners of Food Safety and senior officials from States and UTs, representatives from various central ministries, and key stakeholders from the food industry, consumer groups, agriculture, laboratories, and research organizations.
