The Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Thirteenth Amendment Regulations, 2017 specifying revised standards for milk and milk products were notified vide F.No. A-1 [1]/Standards/MMP/2012, dated October 12, 2017
Regulation 2.1.2 (2) (b) of the said regulations specifies minimum requirements of Milk Fat and Milk Solids-not-Fat [SNF] for different species/classes of milk.
Representations from several stakeholders have been received by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) requesting to include the process of standardization of cow milk using species specific milk components for adjustment of fat & SNF, due to practical difficulties to achieve the desired composition (fat & SNF) and product consistency.
As the current regulations permit standardization to the specified Fat and Solids-not-fat (SNF) content only in respect of full cream milk, toned milk, double toned milk, skimmed milk and standardized milk, it is clarified that if milk and milk components used in the processing and standardization of these products are from the milk of same species, the name of the product may be preceded with the name of the species.
Alternatively, the following labelling declaration may be made in conjunction with the name of the product:
“Made from ___ milk”, (the blank being filled with the name of the species)
