FSSAI issues clarification on mandatory Food Safety Audit

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has issued an advisory on 24th September 2019, clarifying its previous notification dated 13th August 2019 relating to mandatory Food Safety Audit of food business holding central license.

This clarification has been released as various queries were raised by Auditing agencies and food businesses:

  • The order shall be effective from  13th August, 2019 and the first audit report of the food business shall be conducted by 31st December, 2019.
  • FSSAI has clarified that it is important that the complete chain from manufacturing, transport storage etc. shall follow good hygiene practice. However, only food business involved in manufacturing and processing sector under the product category mentioned in the previous order should get their premises mandatorily audited, in the initial stage.
  • Head office wherein no food related activities are being done are not mandated to conduct food safety audit.
  • The Audit must be conducted by a recognized agency. Such agency or its auditors should not have provided any training or carried out any internal audits to the food businesses or its parents or subsidiary for last two years.
