FSSAI issues direction regarding standards of formulated supplements for children and issues of their license

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India in its notification dated 18th October, 2019, has issued direction regarding standards of formulated supplements for children and issues of their license.

FSSAI has specified certain standards for formulated supplements under FSS (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Eleventh Amendment Regulations, 2018. These standards specify the requirement of formulated supplements for children of age above 24 months till 36 months.  It is clarified that any complementary food for the age group 24 to 36 months taken in addition to home foods except Foods for Special Dietary Use (FSDU) and Food for Special Medical Purpose (FSMP) shall need to comply with these standards.

Further the licensing authority processing application for new license or renewal of license shall not mention such products under the category of proprietary foods and the Licensing authorities shall consider the pending and new licensing applications with respect to formulated supplements for children under food category 13.2 (Complementary food for older infants and young children). It is further clarified that no license shall be issued or renewed to proprietary food products under the food category 13.2.

The Food Business Operators who have already obtained license for the said category are advised to modify the existing license before renewal of their existing license.
