FSSAI issues letter to keep a check on health supplement labelling defects

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India through its letter dated 18th September, 2019 has requested all the food business operators to keep check on labelling defects on health supplement or nutraceutical products which are in contravention with Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labelling) Regulation, 2011.

FSSAI has stated that it has received reports that nutraceutical/ health supplement products that have gelatine shells or contain ingredients of animal origin are depicting the green dot on their packaging which shall be considered as misbranding or labelling defect. This is in contravention of the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labelling) Regulations, 2011. The Regulations mandates the applicability of veg/non-veg logo on the labels of pre-packed food products.

Therefore, FSSAI has directed all the food products that fall under the category of Nutraceuticals/ Health Supplements to comply with the Food safety standards  (Health Supplements, Nutraceutical, Food for Special Dietary Use, Food for Special Medical Purpose, Functional Food and Novel Food) Regulations, 2016 as well as the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labelling) Regulations, 2011. In case of default or failure to comply with the same, an appropriate action will be taken against defaulting Food Business Operators.
