Government of Tamil Nadu relaxes the provision of maintaining records and registers under major labor laws

The State Government of Tamil Nadu in its Gazette notification dated 18th March, 2020 has notified amendments to 5 major labor laws To relax the provisions for maintenance of records and registers. The amendments allow employers to not maintain certain registers or records if the relevant content is included in any other record maintained by them under any other law.

Amendments are brought under the following labor laws:

  • Tamil Nadu Labor Welfare Fund Rules, 1973
  • Tamil Nadu Industrial Establishments (Conferment of Permanent Status to Workmen) Rules, 1981
  • Tamil Nadu Payment of Subsistence Allowance Rules, 1981
  • Minimum Wages (Tamil Nadu) Rules, 1953
  • Tamil Nadu Maternity Benefit Rules, 1967

The draft amendment will be taken into consideration on or after the date of expiry of three months from the date of publication of this notification in the Tamil Nadu Government Gazette (March 18, 2020).  Objection or Suggestion, if any, should be sent within such period, addressed in duplicate to the Secretary to Government, Labour and Employment Department, Fort St. George, Chennai-600 009 through the commissioner of Labour, Chennai-600 006.
