FSSAI has released a letter relating to compliance of Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and labeling) Regulation, 2011 by the manufacturers/ packers of Nutraceuticals or Health Supplements.
It has been reported to FSSAI that many Nutraceuticals/Health Supplements containing gelatin shells or other ingredients of animal origin are branded as vegetarian product (green dot). This is a misbranding and labeling defect as per Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and labeling) Regulation, 2011. The Regulation requires veg/non-veg logo on the pre-packed food products.
FSSAI has directed all the State/ UTs to initiate strong enforcement to check the sale of such misbranded products and take appropriate action against Food Business Operators in default.
