Hinges (Quality Control) Order, 2023

The Indian government has introduced the “Hinges (Quality Control) Order, 2023.” This order aims to regulate the production and sale of goods or articles related to hinges in the country.

The order will come into force on June 12, 2024. The mandatory use of the Standard Mark is a key provision of the order, requiring goods or articles specified in the attached Table to conform to the corresponding Indian Standard mentioned.

These products must bear the Standard Mark, obtained through a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), in accordance with the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.

Notably, the order does not apply to goods or articles manufactured domestically for export. However, micro and small enterprises, as defined in the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006, will have varying timelines for compliance. Micro enterprises will be subject to the order after December 12, 2025, while small enterprises will be affected after September 12, 2024.

The Bureau of Indian Standards is designated as the certifying and enforcing authority for the goods or articles specified in the Table. Any person found contravening the provisions of this order will face penalties under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.

The Hinges (Quality Control) Order, 2023 reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring the quality and safety of products in the market. By implementing standardized practices and certification, the order aims to enhance consumer confidence and promote the growth of the industry while maintaining the highest standards of quality.
