Karnataka Govt Approves Revolutionary Menstrual Leave Policy 2025

In a landmark move aimed at advancing gender-sensitive workplace reforms, the Government of Karnataka, under the leadership of Chief Minister Shri Siddaramaiah, has approved the Karnataka Menstrual Leave Policy, 2025. This progressive decision positions Karnataka among the few jurisdictions globally to formally introduce one paid leave day per month exclusively for women employees.

The policy—hailed as a significant stride in women’s health rights—was approved by the State Cabinet and is expected to be implemented across government departments and extended to other establishments as the State issues operational guidelines.

Key Highlights of the Karnataka Menstrual Leave Policy, 2025

1. One Paid Leave Day Every Month

Women employees across Karnataka will now be entitled to:

  • 1 paid leave day per month,
  • Equivalent to 12 days of additional paid leave annually,
  • Specifically recognized as Menstrual Leave.

This leave is over and above existing earned leave, casual leave, or medical leave entitlements.

2. Commitment to Gender-Inclusive Workplaces

The policy reflects the State’s commitment to:

  • Supporting women’s health and well-being,
  • Reducing stigma around menstruation,
  • Promoting inclusive and humane working conditions.

3. Applicability and Rollout

  • The Cabinet announcement confirms coverage for women employees across Karnataka.
  • The detailed operational notification—covering government offices, public sector undertakings, and possible extensions to private establishments—is expected to follow in the Official Gazette.

4. Karnataka as a Policy Pioneer

With this approval, Karnataka becomes a frontrunner in progressive labour reforms, joining global examples such as Japan and Spain, and aligning with a growing movement advocating menstrual equity and workplace dignity.
