Lakshadweep Invites Transgender Persons to Avail Welfare Support

In line with national efforts to ensure the welfare and protection of transgender persons, the Union Territory (UT) of Lakshadweep has issued a public notice urging residents who identify as transgender to come forward and register with the Directorate of Social Welfare & Tribal Affairs.

This move follows directives from the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, which has instructed all states and UTs to implement welfare schemes aimed at empowering the transgender community.

🏳️‍⚧️ What the Notice States

Despite the readiness to roll out welfare initiatives for the transgender community, no individual in Lakshadweep has officially self-identified as transgender so far. Due to this, the administration has not been able to implement the schemes intended for their benefit.

To initiate the process, the administration is inviting individuals who identify as transgender to come forward within 30 days from the date of the notice.

📌 Key Details:

  • Who should respond?
Any resident of Lakshadweep who identifies as transgender.
  • Where to go?
Contact the Director, Directorate of Social Welfare & Tribal Affairs.
  • Timeframe:
Within 30 days from the notice date (AUGUST 27TH 2025)
  • Nodal Officer:
The Director, Social Welfare & Tribal Affairs will act as the Nodal Officer for transgender welfare in Lakshadweep.

💬 Why This Matters

The Government of India has laid out a comprehensive framework for the protection of rights and social welfare of transgender persons, including:

  • Issuance of Transgender ID cards
  • Access to healthcare, education, housing, and livelihood support
  • Inclusion in social security schemes
  • Protection from discrimination and violence

However, for these measures to reach the intended beneficiaries, self-identification and registration are essential first steps.
