New Powers Conferred for Elevator Safety in Delhi

The Govt. of Delhi has issued a notification granting the powers of ‘Inspector of Lifts’ to Deputy Electrical Inspectors and Assistant Electrical Inspectors within the Labour Department of the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi. This notification was issued on November 21, 2023.

This empowerment is effective immediately and continues until further orders, without any additional remuneration or pay benefits. The move aims to strengthen the oversight and regulatory framework concerning elevators, ensuring their proper functioning and safety compliance throughout the National Capital Territory.

The conferred powers allow Deputy Electrical Inspectors and Assistant Electrical Inspectors in the Labour Department to carry out inspections, assessments, and regulatory functions in line with the Bombay Lifts Act. This act, originally enacted in 1939, focuses on regulating the operation and safety standards of lifts and elevators.

The delegation of powers to these officials reflects a proactive approach by the authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of the residents in Delhi. Elevator safety is a critical aspect of urban infrastructure, and this measure is expected to contribute to a more robust and effective regulatory mechanism for elevators across the National Capital Territory.
