KOLKATA: The New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) has started online birth registration. The system was made effective from last Wednesday.
The NKDA’s online birth registration system is open only for those kids born in any hospital or nursing home located within the New Townarea only, falling under NKDA’s jurisdiction. For greater Rajarhat area, the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation is responsible for issuing birth certificate.

NKDA officials said that till recently, there was no demand for birth registration from New Town as no hospital in the township had a gynecology wing. Child birth of New Town residents used to take place at hospitals located outside New Town area and thus there was no need for the NKDA authorities to issue birth certificate.

However, officials said that now with a specialised Woman and Child Care hospital coming up at New Town, requests for issuing birth certificate has started to come at the NKDA office.

Officials said that the online application system for birth registration has a simplified verification process and applicants would be able to track down the progress of the birth certificate to be issued. “The applicant does not have to visit the NKDA office. Only an identity proof and the hospital or doctor’s certificate of birth is required to be submitted by the applicant through online,” said an official.
The applicant will get step-by-step intimation of progress of issuing birth certificate and the certificates will have electronically digitised signatures.
From April 2, NKDA for the first time started assessment an collection of property tax through online based on the Unit Area Assessment (UAA) system. Earlier, NKDA had introduced online services for building plan sanction, completion certificate, death registration and renewing or issuing new trade licences. Also, NKDA was the first urban local body in the state to fully introduce online building plan sanction scheme since 2013.
