Two govt hospitals in city fail to get NABH accreditation

Two state-run hospitals in the city, KC General Hospital in Malleswaram and Jayanagar General Hospital have failed to get accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH) as they have not met the required standards.

The NABH has only issued a progressive level certificate to the two hospitals. The two hospitals had applied for NABH accreditation in 2013.

The K C General Hospital is yet to get the accreditation as it does not has enough staff to meet the standards of the NABH. Sources in the hospital told Deccan Herald that the hospital got only a progressive level certificate as the NABH stated that there are not enough nurses in the institute.

“At present, the hospital has 132 staff nurses and to get the accreditation, we need to have at least 160 staff nurses,” said a senior doctor from the hospital. The hospital’s medical superintendent Dr Manjunath said they have sent a proposal to the government to create additional posts under the National Health Mission.

Series of changes
NABH members had recommended a series of changes after a pre-assesment of the hospital premises and facilities. They that stated that the hospital should have a modular operation theatre, a kitchen of its own and upgrade its Central Sterile Supply Department.

A senior officer from the department of health and family welfare said that Jayanagar General Hospital too got only a progressive level certificate as there are non-compliances in its building structure.

“We were told that the building measures 15 metres less. We were also told that there is not enough compliance to fire safety measures. Hence, the NABH has issued only the progressive level certificate. An estimated Rs 50 lakh is need to upgrade the hospital to the required standards.”

Accreditation by the NABH means that it would benefit all the stake holders. Accredited hospital have to adhere to high quality of care as well as patient safety. Patient satisfaction would also be evaluated by NABH at regular intervals.
