Validity of MBBS Admissions for Academic Year 2023-24

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued a follow-up announcement regarding the admission details of students for the MBBS course in India for the Academic Year 2023-24. This notice is dated January 8, 2024.

It has been brought to the attention of the NMC that the list of 1,04,891 students admitted for the aforementioned academic year includes individuals admitted at the College/Institutional level. This update serves as a continuation of the earlier notice and is crucial for transparency and adherence to regulatory guidelines.

By a letter dated 24th July 2023, the NMC had mandated the organization of counselling, both Undergraduate (UG) and Postgraduate (PG), in online mode for all rounds, including stray vacancy rounds in Private Medical Colleges, starting from the academic year 2023-24. Additionally, institutions and colleges were explicitly prohibited from conducting counselling, including stray vacancy rounds. This directive also applied to deemed universities, in line with a Supreme Court order.

Under Regulation 15 and 16 of Chapter – III of Graduate Medical Education Regulation, 2023, the Government of India is designated as the authority for common counselling. Furthermore, medical institutes are prohibited from admitting candidates in contravention of these regulations. Penalties, including fines and potential barring from admissions in subsequent academic years, are outlined for institutions found in violation.

Quoting the relevant regulations:

“15. Government to appoint a designated authority for common counselling – The Government of India will decide and notify the agency and method of counselling of all undergraduate seats. 16. The prohibition for any student seeking admission any other way than counselling – No medical institute shall admit any candidate to the Graduate Medical Education course in contravention of these regulations…”

The notice concludes with the cautionary information that, despite being part of the final list of 1,04,891 admitted students in the MBBS Course for the Academic Year 2023-24, admissions may be canceled at a later stage pending verification of the admission process by the NMC. This verification will be conducted after receiving details from the Directorate General of Health Services, Government of India, and all State Counselling Authorities concerning admissions made at the institutional/college level for the specified academic session.
