BIS Issues New Standards for Textiles, Water & Food Microbiology

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), under the Department of Consumer Affairs, has released an official notification announcing the establishment of several new Indian Standards related to textiles, water quality, and microbiology of the food chain.

The new standards come into effect starting 26th August 2025, with select older versions to be withdrawn by 26th February 2026.

Key Highlights:

🧵 Textile Standards (Revised):

Sl. NoNew StandardTitleReplacesWithdrawal Date
1IS 1531:2025Textiles — Blanketing Cloth (3rd Rev.)IS 1531:199326 Feb 2026
2IS 1670:2025Yarn — Breaking Force & Elongation (3rd Rev.)IS 1670:199126 Feb 2026

These updates modernize testing methods and align with current international practices.

💧 Water Quality Standards (New Additions):

StandardBased on ISOSubject
IS 19200:2025ISO 15553:2006Detection of Cryptosporidium & Giardia
IS 19333 (Part 1):2025ISO 16266:2006Detection of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Membrane Method)
IS 19333 (Part 2):2025ISO 16266-2:2018Detection of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MPN Method)
IS 19338:2025ISO 29201:2012Variability & Uncertainty in Microbiological Methods
IS 19342:2025ISO 17995:2019Detection of Thermotolerant Campylobacter spp.
IS 19352:2025ISO/TS 12869:2019Legionella detection via qPCR

These standards are expected to enhance the reliability of water testing in India, especially relevant for public health and industrial use.

🧪 Food Chain Microbiology Standards:

StandardBased on ISOSubject
IS 18349 (Part 2):2025ISO 15213-2:2023Enumeration of Clostridium perfringens
IS 18349 (Part 3):2025ISO/TS 15213-3:2024Detection of Clostridium perfringens
IS 19353:2025ISO/TS 17728:2015Sampling Techniques for Food & Feed Microbiology

These are vital for ensuring food safety, especially in manufacturing and agricultural sectors.

📅 Effective Date:

All new standards come into effect on 26th August 2025.

🗓️ Withdrawal of Old Standards:

Older versions of textile standards (IS 1531:1993 and IS 1670:1991) will remain valid until 26th February 2026, after which they will be formally withdrawn.
