The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India vide it’s notification dated 24th February 2020 has issued direction to all food business operators dealing in sweets to display the date of manufacturing and best before date of the products. The direction shall be effective from 1st June 2020.
At present, it is mandatory to mention these details on labels of pre-packaged/pre-packed sweets. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has issued the above direction after reports of instances of sale of stale/expired sweets to consumers which poses potential health hazards.
The Food Business Operator shall decide and display the ‘best before date’ of sweets depending upon the nature of the product and local conditions, it the tray or carrier that displays the sweets. Food safety commissioners of states have been asked to ensure compliance with these directions.
