The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has officially launched a specialized licensing and registration framework for the manufacturing of Ayurveda Aahara products on its Food Safety Compliance System (FoSCoS) portal. A press release on this launch was issued on September 25, 2025.
This measure is intended to streamline the traditional Ayurveda food sector by formalizing the industry and aligning age-old recipes, sourced from authoritative Ayurvedic texts, with modern food safety and quality regulations.
Integrating Tradition with Modern Standards
The new ‘Kind of Business’ (KoB) category for Ayurveda Aahara is rooted in the core Ayurvedic principle of personalized nutrition, which emphasizes tailoring diet to an individual’s constitution (prakriti). By establishing a regulated pathway for these traditional formulations, the FSSAI aims to achieve dual objectives:
- Industry Growth: Providing a structured regulatory environment is expected to boost the food and Ayurveda industries.
- Public Health Support: Ensuring the availability of authentic and regulated Ayurveda Aahara products will serve as critical support for prescribed Ayurvedic treatment plans.
To ensure a smooth and efficient transition for Food Business Operators (FBOs), the FSSAI, in collaboration with the Ministry of Ayush, has already published a list of 91 approved Ayurveda Aahara recipes in an order dated July 25, 2025. This list serves as a pre-approved reference for manufacturers, ensuring both authenticity and regulatory compliance from the outset.
The initiative reflects the government’s commitment to integrating the wisdom of Ayurveda with contemporary food safety practices for the benefit of both industry stakeholders and public health.
