Kerala Government Proposes Minimum Wages for Paint Manufacturing Workers

In a move aimed at ensuring fair wages and better working conditions, the Government of Kerala has issued a formal notification declaring its intention to fix minimum wages for employees in the paint manufacturing sector under the Minimum Wages Act, 1948.

📢 What’s Happening?

The State Government has identified that workers employed in Paint Manufacturing Industries are currently not protected under the minimum wage provisions of the Minimum Wages Act. Recognizing the need for legal wage protection, the government has invoked Section 27 of the Minimum Wages Act, 1948, to propose the inclusion of this employment category in Part I of the Schedule of the Act.

🧑‍🏭 Why This Matters

This initiative aims to:

  • Protect workers from wage exploitation.
  • Ensure standardized pay in the paint manufacturing sector.
  • Promote fair labor practices and better industrial relations.

Once finalized, the notification will legally mandate minimum wage rates for all employees working in paint manufacturing units across the state.

📨 Public Participation Invited

The notification also opens the door for public consultation. The government is inviting objections or suggestions from:

  • Employers in the paint industry
  • Workers’ unions
  • Civil society organizations
  • Individuals affected by or interested in the move

📅 Deadline to Respond

Any feedback must be submitted within three months from the date of publication of the notification in the Official Gazette – September 3 , 2025.
