The Government of Meghalaya has issued the official holiday list for the year 2026, detailing the General Holidays, Negotiable Instruments (NI) Act Holidays, Local Holidays, Special Holiday, and Restricted Holidays to be observed across the state. The notification was released under Notification No. GAA.78/2025/23 and GAA.78/2015/23, with approval of the Governor of Meghalaya.
These holidays will apply to State Government Offices, Revenue and Magisterial Courts, and all Educational Institutions in Meghalaya.
1. GENERAL HOLIDAYS FOR 2026

2. LOCAL HOLIDAYS
Each Deputy Commissioner may declare up to 3 (three) Local Holidays in their respective districts for the following occasions:
- Garo Labour Corps Day
- Shad Suk Mynsiem
- Unitarian Anniversary Day
- Shad Nongkrem
- Any other locally significant festival
Exception:
For East Khasi Hills District, Local Holidays will be declared directly by the State Government.
3. SPECIAL HOLIDAY
A Special Holiday is declared on:
22 June 2026 – Rev. Thomas Jones Day
Applicable to Government Offices, Magisterial Courts, and Educational Institutions in:

- South West Khasi Hills
- West Khasi Hills
- East Jaintia Hills
- West Jaintia Hills
- Eastern West Khasi Hills
- Ri-Bhoi District
4. RESTRICTED HOLIDAYS (Any 2 days permitted per employee)
Employees may choose any 2 holidays from the following list:

5. HOLIDAYS UNDER THE NEGOTIABLE INSTRUMENTS ACT, 1881

The NI Act holidays largely mirror the General Holiday list but specifically apply to:
- Banks
- Financial institutions
- Treasury Offices
These include:
New Year’s Day, Republic Day, Holi, Id-ul-Fitr, Good Friday, Id-ul-Zuha (Bakrid), Beh Dienkhlam, Tirot Sing Day, Independence Day, Janmashtami, Gandhi Jayanti, Dussehra, Diwali, Wangala, Seng Kut Snem, and Christmas festivals, among others.
