In a move to uphold regional linguistic pride and promote inclusivity, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has reiterated its directive that the Bengali language must be displayed at the top of all signboards, hoardings, and signage in the city. The final deadline for compliance has been set for 30th September 2025.
This directive stems from Office Order No. 16 of 2024-2025, originally issued on 30th December 2024 by the Municipal Secretary, and builds upon an earlier order (No. 14 dated 12.11.2024). The latest order formalizes the requirement across a broad range of establishments.
📢 Applicability:
The language display rule is mandatory for the following private establishments:
- Shops
- Offices
- Restaurants & Hotels
- Hospitals & Diagnostic Centers
- Companies & Shopping Malls
- Institutional and Assembly Establishments
The Bengali text must be displayed at the top, in larger or at least equal prominence to any other language that may be used on the signage.
🎯 Purpose of the Initiative:
- To preserve and promote the linguistic heritage of Bengal
- To ensure inclusivity and accessibility for all residents
- To reinforce Bengali’s cultural and civic presence in public spaces
🏛️ Administrative Action:
The directive has been issued with the approval of the Hon’ble MMIC (Housing, Law, PPP & Personnel) and the Hon’ble Mayor of Kolkata. In light of this, departmental heads including:
- Chief Manager (Advertisement)
- Chief Manager (Market)
- Chief Manager (Licence)
have been instructed to initiate immediate compliance measures and ensure enforcement.
⚠️ Deadline for Compliance:
30th September 2025
Establishments are advised to revise their signage without delay to avoid penalties or administrative action. The KMC is expected to begin inspections post-deadline to ensure full implementation.
