CHENNAI: The Tamil Naduhealth department has sealed a hospital in Tiruvanamalai where more than 500 abortions, suspected to be sex-selective abortions, were performed. Also, the hospital did not have licence to conduct abortions under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971.
Officials in the Directorate of Public Health have filed a complaint with the Tiruvanamalai town police against Dr R Selvammal, who went absconding after officials raided her hospital on Wednesday.
Sri Bhuvaneshwari Hospitals in Thiruvoodal Street had two rooms where at least 10 abortions were performed every day, said joint director Dr D Pandian. “We have picked up at least 500 case sheets. We called a couple of patients and they confirmed that they had their abortions in this clinic. The clinic does not have the licence to do any abortions,” he said.
On Wednesday, a team of officials visited several clinics and scan centres in the district after they received complaints about rampant sex determination and sex-selective abortions in the region. They issued notices to at least three scan centres under the PNDT Act – Ramana Scans, Shiva Scans and Deepam Hi-tech Scans – for not having proper documents of scans reports.
